Ecotourism
The
Northern Mountain Range and the Coast of the state of Oaxaca,
are endowed with great natural beauty, which for many years
was protected by the rugged geography which surrounded them.
Today, the region has much to offer the visitor in the way
of natural marvels which have been created through the passage
of time.
Eco-tourism continues to grown in our state.
The culture of ecology has grown deep roots in towns and cities,
the inhabitants of which have learned to both respect and
take advantage of the richness of its forests.
In the southern mountain range of the Oaxacan
coast, it is possible for the visitor to alternate visits
to the beautiful Huatulco Bays (Bahias de Huatulco) with adventures
in the coffee plantations which are found in Santa Maria Huatulco,
San Miguel del Puerto and Pluma Hidalgo. There, plantation
owners provide assistance to the visitor in order that he
or she learn about the natural and cultural riches that the
residents have inherited through the passage of the years.
Imagine yourself navigating through the rapids
of the Copalita river, contemplating beautiful sunsets and
birds of many different species as they search for an evening
refuge. It is possible to enjoy all of these activities to
the fullest!
One of the ecological wonders of the world
is found in the Northern mountain range of Ixtlan de Juárez,
a mountain town whose inhabitants, from an early age, are
aware of the need to respect the environment by taking care
of, and protecting the flora and fauna that is found in its
forests. It is for this reason, perhaps, that this region
has developed an important eco-tourism project which it has
made available to the visitor. The visitor is shown, via guided
tours, what may well be the most attractive forests in the
world. Here, it is possible, within a 60 minute period, to
move from a hot, dry climate into mountains which are cold,
damp and covered by ice the greater part of the year and upon
which snow occasionally falls. The visitor will have the opportunity
to see a large number of plants indigenous to the area, as
well as birds, reptiles and mammals such as the tapir, the
jaguar, the spider monkey and 3 varieties of guacamaya.
We
invite you to brush the cob-webs from your mind and come to
encounter a real paradise.
Another attractive option is a visit to the
towns in which eco-tourist modules called Tourist Yú’ù
(a Zapotec word which means “the Tourist House”)
and tourist inns have been especially built to bring together
all of the elements necessary to allow the visitor to experience
great natural and cultural richness every day. It is here
that ancestral traditions and customs still prevail.
The inns were designed to offer the visitor
an alternative form of lodging, thereby assisting in ensuring
a pleasant stay in all of the places visited. Generally, all
of the inns have private rooms, small kitchens, bathrooms,
areas for camping, parking spaces and a small shop which sells
arts and crafts which are locally produced.
If the visitor wishes to see more of the surrounding
area, we recommend a visit to the towns of Hierve el Agua
[Boiling Water] (in San Lorenzo Albarradas), San Sebastian
de las Grutas (Grotto), Santiago Apoala, San Francisco Yosocuta
or Benito Juárez. The feeling of freedom that will
come from traveling in this region cannot be compared with
anywhere else.
